The $8 million cut from Mayor Bloomberg’s budget will force planners to scrap plans for a footbridge meant to link Squibb Park in Brooklyn Heights to the soon to be developed park space. The footbridge was seen as a necessary link and access point for the community to the Park. The budget cuts means that the City will only contribute $92 million over the next two years to the $350 million project. Despite the budget cut, the Mayor says he remains committed to the project. The first sections of the Park are set to open by the end of 2009. Several of the recreation proposals are on a hold until more funding becomes available. Many of the private developments that will fund much of the operations of the Brooklyn Bridge Park are also on hold.
